The Globe's Leonard Zehr writes that Cardiome reported, in a study with 56 patients suffering from atrial fibrillation, or rapid and irregular heartbeats, 61 per cent of those receiving a high dose of the RSD-1235 drug achieved normal heart rhythm during a 30-minute observation period, compared with 5 per cent in the placebo group. After 24 hours, 100 per cent of successful high-dose patients remained in normal heart rhythm without any serious side effects. Atrial fibrillation is a leading cause of stroke and heart disease. "The point is they can convert arrhythmia in very short order with a high dose of the drug," says Raymond James analyst Brian Bapty. "These results propel the product into the status of a late-stage compound with a potential large market opportunity."
