"There are all sorts of imperialism."

I think you mean there are all sorts of excuses for imperialism. Britain had theirs, Belgium had theirs, Japan and Germany had theirs, and we are currently trying to justify ours. Taking over a country to install democracy for that sake alone is imperialism no different than what I thought the Cold War was about, ie to stop the spread of communist imperialism. You mentioned that Begium relentlessly exploited the Congo....what do you think the real reason for the takeover of Iraq might be? The US is running out of oil and please don't tell me there's plenty in Alaska... Our oil production peaked about 1972 and has been dropping about linearly since.... Wouldn't it just be a pleasant coincidence if we suddenly found ourselves in control of the second largest oil reserves in the world? And wouldn't the Texas oil barons be just thrilled to help get it out of the ground.
