What is the advantage of DV? --Sprint claims to be waiting for DV because they say they can't legitimize setting aside a channel just for data until they see data demand taking off enough to justify it. In reality, they are probably too broke to spend the additional capital for evdo upgrade and are justifying it this way.

re; What is the advantage

==========

As Mighty referenced recently, 1x Release "A" provides simultaneous voice+data... so this does not appear a compelling argument for dv.

PCS's company line is that it advocates dv because it would not have to dedicate a channel to data.

But by - perhaps 2005, when dv may be commercial - if PSC doesn't know if mobile data is for real, then PCS probably doesn't any longer exist.

If PCS does know by or before 2005 that mobile data is a viable revenue generator, dedicating a channel to do will not be an issue.

And in any event, do/1x channels can be dynamically allocated throughout a 24 hour period in response to changing data/voice demand.

And whenever PCS finally makes its decision, on a cost basis, do will be the rational choice, as dv will be far more exotic, complex and expensive, while offering, as Thornley noted on the presentation, similar capabilities to do.

In the interim, resource-poor PCS can minimize its CAPEX budget for the next few years - or until VZ forces its do hand.
