You are right in your analysis. Iran has its own interests in mind here. The Shi'ite controlled Iran is held in check by the Sunni dominated Iraq. Unfortunately, Sunnis are a minority in Iraq and if free elections are held, the Shi'ite of Iraq would take over and destabilize the region.

So, ...yes, ...you shouldn't trust them.
