Al, if you mean some kind of perpetual debt obligation, I doubt anyone could do that these days

Companies issue perpetual debt all the time. A quick look on the web reports Sanwa Bank issuing perpetual debt in 1999, for example.

Moreover, many (most according to T. Friedman) corporate bonds are issued with the understanding that the principal will never truly be paid. The corporation will simply roll the debt forward as the bonds mature.
