You listed some purported successes of "the lesser-evil thing" but failed to list any clear failures.

I would argue that overthrowing a democratically elected government in Iran, and putting the Shah back in power (for the second time) was a failure, South Vietnam (picking up France's failed colonialist goals in blind adherance to 'the Domino theory') was a failure, turning a blind eye to fundamentalism, theocracy, and authoritarianism throughout the Middle East in return for guaranteed oil profits... and numerous other 'short-term successes' turned into long term failures because they worked in opposition to our own true national interests.

That is: not propping up some thieving local 'dictator of the month' simply because he promises to be friendly to 'our' multi-national corporations... but rather working to promote Democracy, human rights, free trade and free markets, and the rule of law.

Any gains we 'earn' on the backs of dictators are gains built upon a base of sand. If we oppose legitimate democratic and national asperations of the people we are working against our OWN best interests.

"Lesser Evil" does not work in the long run.
