Ah, then you are changing the definition of a fence. The very notion of a fence is vague and highly context sensitive - chain link, wood, barb wire. You could put boards together in the shape of the fence, but part of a fence is to keep things in or out... anchoring in space requires a reference point. So, what you are describing is more generic, like a barrier. Barrier and fence are synonyms in some cases and not others. This just illustrates my points about how not even nouns are constant.
