World War II, got the US out of the depression. The buildup in Europe actually started in the late thirties and put lots of Americans back to work.

well, times sure weren't the same then. first, a war with Iraq isn't likely to be a lengthy affair. We aren't going to spend years building fleets of airplanes, ships, guns, ammo, clothes, and whatever else a war takes. Now it takes a few planes, tanks, precise bombs. Further, I'm guessing debt wasn't a problem then. It is now.

I don't think a war will help us much when it comes to getting out of this morass. BWTFDIK?

i thought the depression - the declining GDP part - finished by 1934. the US didn't go to war until 1941, which looks to be well afterward economic recovery.

WWII destroyed the productive capabilities of allies and foes so the US benefitted as supplier of goods and services. No such f*** with recent wars.
