Laugh if you want, but at least do the math -- at average per capita American consumption rates, that little 10% uptick in prices acts like a tax increase.

At the low end of the economic scale, it's money they don't have. Plus a price rise in that basic staple will drive up the cost of a lot of other food products that contain it, adding to the total food bill.

If prices were to rise another 10-20% through the winter as supplies further tighten up, what do you think those people who thought the family budget and mortgage payment was all squared away with their new house will be doing? I don't think they'll be laughing
