>> China Mobile to Launch Service Similar to Chinese Version of Cmode

China Mobile said at the CeBIT Asia 2002 exhibition, which started on Sept. 2, that it plans to launch a new service similar to a Chinese version of "Cmode."

The Cmode service links mobile phones with vending machines. This enables the user to buy a canned juice, for example, by using the cell phone instead of cash. The fees are automatically added to the user's monthly mobile phone bill.

China Mobile's idea of the new service was made public at the exhibition and is similar to that of Cmode.

To buy an item from a vending machine, the user enters their cell phone number using the vending machine's ten key keyboard. In about two seconds, a message with the code number arrives the user's cell phone, and the user can make a purchase by entering that code number. This service will be made available only to China Mobile cell phone users.

Apparently, with a view to appealing to potential customers, canned juice was offered free of charge at the exhibition site to China Mobile cell phone users. <<
