RF Micro Up on Expectations of Good News from Nokia
Thursday September 5, 4:12 pm ET

biz.yahoo.com

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Shares in chipmaker RF Micro Devices Inc. (NasdaqNM:RFMD - News) rose almost 12 percent on Thursday after reports its largest customer, Nokia (NYSE:NOK - News; NOK1V.HE), was set to introduce several new wireless telephone models.

RF Micro shares closed up 9.7 percent, or 61 cents, at $6.90 on Nasdaq, after earlier trading as high as $7.03.

Finland's Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, will unveil several new models Friday, including one aimed at the youth market with a color screen and a built-in camera to help drive the sluggish handset market, according to media reports.

Nokia declined to comment or confirm the reports. It will hold a news conference in France on Friday, but has declined to say it was to launch new models.

Nokia, which accounts for at least half of RF Micro's revenue, also is scheduled to make a mid-quarter update for its third quarter on Sept. 10. RF Micro makes circuits for mobile phones and other wireless devices.

"People believe (the Nokia update) will be good," said C.E. Unterberg, Towbin analyst Kalpesh Kapadia, who rates RF Micro's stock a "near-term market perform" and "long-term buy."

"Today, people have been looking at (RF Micro) saying, OK, I want to own something going into the Nokia update, and they seem to be a logical candidate," he added.

Lehman Brothers analyst Joseph To agreed: "If Nokia does talk positively, (RF Micro) generates roughly between 50 (percent) and 65 percent of its revenue from Nokia during a quarter." He has an "underperform" rating on RF Micro.

RF Micro officials could not be reached to comment.

Nokia has already unveiled six color-screen phone models this year, including a high-end 7650 phone with built-in camera, but has said it will unveil another four. Analysts have said that the new phones will boost Nokia's presence in the low-end segment of the market.

RE: "...custom-designed chips that can be built at low cost."

Obviously, not a new concept, but a new marketing campaign.

RE: "RapidChip, consists of a set of modules for adding various basic technology features, together with customizable logic and a mainstream set of chip design tools..."

Again, IP cores and EDA tools are industry standards, and LSI is targeting a particular market segment with this program.
