I agree with you somewhat. I know how to adjust earnings reports year to year, take out one-time gains and acquisition charges, etc., and I understand how such items affect earnings year to year. But 99% of the investors out there have no accounting experience and react only to what they hear in the news.

However, my point in relying on GAAP earnings is that ANY COMPANY that relies on pro forma numbers will be trashed by the investing public as corrupt and trying to hide something. Companies that are up front about their GAAP earnings will be rewarded as "upstanding" corporate citizens, and will be given a higher P/E, and thus stock price. That's the critical reason why companies need to embrace GAAP earnings and forget about pro forma results.
