My analysis of the situation is that it is the warlords that keep the peace in the region. The alternative was the Taliban, who kept a more quiet peace, but the warlords are preferable both to us and to the locals. And I don't seem to be hearing about reports of bombings of wedding ceremonies recently, so I would guess that we're winning hearts and minds.

I'd agree with you here Carl. Unfortunately the current "keepers of the peace" will need to be replaced, for the reasons cited in the article by Hackworth.

As to bombing weddings, I think our guys learned from that. Less bombing, MORE winning of hearts and minds. That's the route I think we need to take. Let the Talibs and al Qaida be the aggressors. Let THEM keep blowing up civilians, like they did yesterday. We'll build schools and sell Coca Cola.
