Well, as you can see from Bill's response, it doesn't make much difference. A little inter-service rivalry caused Hackworth to be momentarily confused, or something. Far be it from me to say that Bill's reaction might possibly have anything to do with Carl's "selective perception".

Just for completeness, I dug up this account of Reagan's letter on Ollie in the '94 Senate campaign. Allegedly off the DJ wire.

Reagan 'Pretty Steamed' At North
For Iran-Contra Statements
---
RICHMOND, Va. - Former President
Ronald Reagan jumped into the Virginia
Senate race Thursday, saying he was
''getting pretty steamed'' over what he
said were false statements by
Republican candidate Oliver North.
Reagan's comments came in an
exchange of letters with former Nevada
Sen. Paul Laxalt.
Laxalt supports North's GOP
opponent, James Miller.
Miller is Reagan's former budget
chief.
Reagan accused North of lying about
the Iran-Contra scandal, but he stopped
short of endorsing Miller in the race
for the seat held by Democratic U.S.
Sen. Charles Robb.
''I do have to admit that I am
getting pretty steamed about the
statements coming from Oliver North. I
never instructed him or anyone in my
administration to mislead Congress on
Iran-Contra matters or anything else,''
Reagan wrote.
''I certainly did not know anything
about the Iran-Contra diversion,''
Reagan wrote. ''And, the private
meetings he said he had with me just
didn't happen.''
In Washington, Virginia's GOP
senator, John Warner, said of North:
''Now is the time for him to
withdraw.''
Warner has said North should not be
running for the Senate because of his
criminal convictions. North was
convicted of three felonies in the
affair, but they were later overturned.
Laxalt noted in a letter to Reagan
that the former Marine lieutenant
colonel wrote in his book ''Under
Fire'' that Reagan knew everything
about Iran-Contra. He also noted North
said in a recent TV interview that
Reagan directed him to lie to Congress
about the arms-for-hostages scandal.
North's campaign said it was
preparing a response to the letters.
North and Miller are battling for
delegates to a June 4 convention. The
winner will face the victor of a June
14 Democratic primary.
