I think it should be called 'liberalism'. It's not a dirty word; why surrender it to the hard right that uses the word contemptuously?

Properly speaking, that which you refer to as the "hard right" still lies within the tradition called "liberalism." American politics is firmly liberal, in the classical sense. We don't have any mainstream illiberal political parties. The fringe American Communist party, lunatic Neo Nazi clubs, maybe Communitarians, thats about it. Europe, on the other hand...
