Granted, it could be, but a lot has changed in the industry since 1999. In 1999, these machines practically sold themselves. Now, I am assuming, it is much more difficult to move these machines as a result of spending being down. Perhaps that accounts for a bit of the extra people onboard.

Plus, there have been some acquisitions since 1999. The company has taken on more tasks than it had at the height of the dot com era because it's possible that someone had the foresight to realize the good times would not last forever and more would have to be offered for less.

One particularly disturbing fact wrt these big tech employers is that the current trend in the IT area, is outsourcing to indian consulting firms. I'm sure sunw is participating in this as are cisco amat, etc. So even if revenue levels remained constant or improved, employment bias should be to the downside.
