US Future Inflation Gauge Rises

September 6, 2002

NEW YORK, Sept 6 (Reuters) - U.S. inflation climbed higher in August, buoyed by a spurt in real
estate loans and stronger job growth, a report showed on Friday.

The Economic Cycle Research Institute's Future Inflation Gauge rose to 109.0 last month from 107.0
in July, ECRI said. Fewer purchasing managers reported slower deliveries in August, which curbed the
rise in the index.

"Challenging the concern in some quarters about deflation, the (index) indicates that even with a
subpar recovery, U.S. inflationary pressures are on the rise," the report said.

The annualized growth rate, which smooths out monthly fluctuations, rose to 18.8 percent in August
from 15.7 percent in July.
