The interesting thing about Intel's 3ghz P4 is that they had to respec the motherboards for them. The newly designed socket 478 P4 boards, that just replaced the socket 423 P4 boards, can't supply enough power for the hot running P4s, so Intel has to redesign their motherboards - again.

Intel has done a good job of accelerating their ramp of P4, but they've gotten close to the end of the line (200mhz to go) with nothing new to come that can stand up to Barton, much less Hammer.

Next year for Intel will be like this year for AMD - waiting for the new design on the new process and nothing better coming for a painfully long time.

For AMD, the bad times have a few months to go - for Intel, the bad times start in a few months and stretch out for several years until they get an SOI process going.

SOI lets Hammer use an inexpensive, low-flow, low-noise heatsink/fan like this one: myworld.com.my

Even for 32-bit chips, Intel is having to increase voltage and amps. We haven't seen power figures for the 64-bit Madison on .13, which will have to compete with Athlon-64 and 64-bit Hammer, but McKinley is a 130watt chip - probably why Dell said "no thanks".

Remember when the 386 came out and IBM said "users don't need 32 bits" and didn't come out with a 386? Compaq cleaned IBM's clock with the Deskpro 386.

I wonder if Dell will stand by and let HPQ do to them what Compaq did to IBM?
