Given the wide disparity in Indonesia's and East Timor's power, it's doubtful that Indonesia needed any additional weapons. The only green light they needed was to know we wouldn't take action - like military intervention or economic sanctions. Should we have done something like this IYO? What more do you think the UN should have done? Corporations generally don't like wars which disrupt economic activity. They like peace and order so they can get on with business. and indirect corporate interests (domino theory). If one country demonstrates that the people of the country can run their own affairs and control their own resources, others might get the same idea. Sheesh, this is ridiculous. Gee, if we didn't like East Timor being independent and running its own affairs and controlling their own resources, wouldn't we have a much bigger problem with all the other independent countries in the region, like Indonesia itself, all of which run their own affairs and control their own resources?
