Resolutions The Associated Press Sep 7, 2002 PARIS (AP) - The world community should be "outraged" by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's violations of U.N. resolutions, Secretary of State Colin Powell said in an interview published Saturday. Powell's remarks were published a day after President Bush opened a campaign for international support against Iraq with telephone calls to French President Jacques Chirac, Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin. "The resolutions he's violating are not American resolutions, but United Nations resolutions," Powell told French daily Le Monde. "There are nine, and he has violated them all." "The United Nations, the international community, every European nation should be outraged," he said, according to a French translation of his remarks. All three contacted Friday by Bush agreed to listen, the White House said. However, Putin and Chirac have expressed their opposition to any unilateral U.S. action against Iraq. "That we disagree is not a disaster," Powell said. "We should never lose sight of the fact that even in disagreement, we speak, we exchange points of view." The top U.S. diplomat said the United States would share information with its allies about Iraq and the decisions of its leaders. "How far have they gone? We must share the information that we have, so that people can make their own opinions," he said, according to Le Monde. "It is incumbent upon Iraq to show the civilized world that it wants to be a civilized nation, not a rogue state, led by a rogue," Powell was quoted as saying. Powell said that the possibility of a return of U.N. weapons inspectors to Iraq was only a means to the end of disarming Saddam. "The inspections are not the objective. The objective is disarmament," he said. AP-ES-09-07-02 1057EDT This story can be found at: ap.tbo.com
