The car analogy is very apt, Karen.

I watched at least three Court TV cases where very decent people were sentenced to prison for the ultimate results of road rage incidents. In each case, these otherwise good citizens seemed as perplexed as any one else as to how they could have stepped out of their true characters in that fatal moment. I do think it is a very apt illustration of how we may find ourselves to be changed by a certain venue which we enter from time to time. Another somewhat similar example might be the behavior of "good citizens" who get caught up in a lynch mob.

whether posters are real or not is an artificial argument, not worthy of all this attention

I tend to agree with that, so here's my bit of unworthy attention to the matter ...

I've never met an SIer in person but did see one in an interview on CNBC. The TV personality was more reserved than the one displayed on SI. I've also sometimes noticed that sort of difference in the more personal "venue" of PMs and e-mails I've received from SIers. But I don't particularly see either persona as more real than the other nor either one as phony. I just think, as you indicated, that we're programmed to perform differently in various social situations. Rambi, for example, has described her seeming paradox of personalities in SI v. 3D, and I consider them both to be real.

That said, I think I'll upgrade my opinion from unworthy to two-cents-worth ... :)

Kholt, if a person exits their car they can shoot you, or beat you up. If an alias has a hissy fit what harm is done?
