Hi jjkirk,
The German Bundestag may have approved the missiles by a 286-226 margin, reflecting a solid democratic consensus

Statements like this always make me suspicious. That is not a consensus 56% pro and 44% against is a majority yes but majority and consensus are not interchangeable as a consensus has the the connotation of unanimity . 44% against is far too big in my estimation to dismiss as this author does.

Up here with our language nonsense the Québec separatist movement garnered 40% only in 1980. Wow the federalists won case closed ? Well in 1992 we did it again. 43% for separation this time. And then in 1995 49% pro separation. dgeq.qc.ca
Not to get into a debate of Québec here (please no LOL) but this author treats the majority vote as if that should just quell all dissent. Wars are fought on much less.

regards
Kastel

>>t has been almost a quarter-century since the German government of Helmut Schmidt, a Social Democrat, agreed...<<

In the mean time he´s older (oh me oh my, who would have thought THAT...;), had a bypass or two, and is still running his weekly ZEIT. Here´s his article on the subject discussed (Zeit of 01.08.02)

Hi jjkirk,

Yesterday, on CNN's Capital Gang it was reported that Donald Rumsfeld had withdrawn a 2,300 word opinion piece which was to have been inserted into the editorial page at the Washington Post today.

The significance of this, to me, is that the Bushista neocons are growing increasingly isolated and incapable of convincing anyone that their immoral scheme to murder tens if not hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis would be anything less than a heinous war crime.

All the best, Ray
