Exactly! That's how the game is played! It's all about defending oil company profits. If we set out to become energy independent we certainly could do so (like we set out to put a man on the moon). The technologies for the U.S. to become energy independent are there today! Wind power and solar power have come down 80-90% in price over the past 25 years!!! Wind power is currently experiecing a boom in construction. We now have cars running on hybrid gas/electric engines that get 60 MPG. Ford will soon be sellling a hybrid gas/electric SUV that gets 40 MPG (that's right, an SUV that gets 40 MPG). There's absolutely no reason why we have to be so dependent on Middle Eastern oil anymore. The only reason why we are is because the oil companies control the U.S. government and will never accept a policy that dramtically lessens our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. It's time for the American people to wake up and demand energy independence!!!
