Can people really see him this way, or is it just mean-spiritedness?

People really take their Politics seriously. Clinton fed the hatred of him with his personal habits, and his political wife. Bush has not given his haters much to hang their hats on. They are still feeding off the closeness of the election.

I have come to the conclusion that we must live in parallel worlds, perhaps never to meet.

At either side of the Political spectrum, there really are two different "World Visions." How people can grow up to see these two different visions, from very similar BS's, has the makings of a very good book. In short, it is the "half empty or half full," way of looking at the world.

There is what appears to me to be a concerted effort to portray Bush as a most grotesque caricature

Poor W, so unfairly maligned. Compared to Clinton, who had a free pass. That 8 year hatred campaign never really happened. And W even almost won the election.
