Re : " 64-bit K8 processors are not likely to replace 32-bit K7 processors in the market mainstream before the third quarter of 2003."

Not good for AMD. I wonder if there would be performance improvement (over 3400+) by the time it hits the market in Q3, '03. Prescott (if it does by then) may come out performing much better than a 3400+ hammer.

BTW :
8:17AM Advanced Micro cut to Underperform at Gerard Klauer; target $7 (AMD) 8.04: Gerard Klauer Mattison downgrades to UNDERPERFORM from Neutral and establishes a 12-month target of $7 (based on 0.9x estimated 2003 book value of $8.07 per share).

Isn't AMDs book value about ~10 ?

Maui.

Dave- 64-bit K8 processors are not likely to replace 32-bit K7 processors in the market mainstream before the third quarter of 2003

I don't there is anything shocking about this statement. If mainstream means more than 50% of the desktop market, it will take a while. But if 30% of the market is Hammer in Q2 03, there will already be significant impact on ASP's.

d, re: "VIA, the biggest AMD chipset supplier, said that the 64-bit K8 processors are not likely to replace 32-bit K7 processors in the market mainstream before the third quarter of 2003."

This is earliest I have seen a K8/K7 cross-over. AMD's 2001 annual report noted end of 2004 and then a later CC noted end of 2003. Of course, this is from Via which must be wondering about its own chipset cross-over from SiS...

This would be a much more rapid transition than the K7/K6 transition.
