' in a style that was "clearer than truth," as Dean Acheson later said approvingly'

Yes ... that was the time of Terry and the Pirates, remember that strip ... much of my early study of this language was in the comics, for political commentary there you had that one and L'il Abner representing extremes of the spectrum .... it was a long time before Doonesbury came along and put it all into the vernacular

Upthread i was wrong to say it was Acheson's speech of 1950 from which originated the 'domino theory' slogan ... it wasn't, that was Eisenhauer in '54 .... but A's in '50 was a watershed event, widely reported, it successfully changed the whole nature of US perception of Geopolitik to one of ideologies, as opposed to national interests of the powers .... very few questioned this abrupt switch, at the time .... not until the 60s, when the blowback of the mistakes began making themselves brutally apparent .... there would have been struggles in any case, without a doubt the russians and chinese also had ambitions of empire, but in a game of What If it would be amusing to explore how many fewer villagers would have died in various proxy battlefields, absent the 'yer with us or agin us' propaganda
