I think you hit upon it earlier. He didn't see the bear coming and then he didn't see the severity of it. That combined with the CTR debacle rattled his self-confidence. This is turn set off a debilitating bout of fear combined with trading paranoia. The fear part encompasses both the fear of being wrong in public and fear of losing his subscriber base. Being the type with a huge ego to maintain, he can't face his fears in public and he can't let it appear that he's gone cold. So he tries to protect the ego from being bruised by playing the avoidance game thus minimizing his exposure to humiliating questions that he has no good answer for. Instead of trying to confront these fears head-on he is haunted by them and they eat away at his confidence. It becomes harder and harder for him to go back and overcome those fears.

Well, if you imagine that paragraph read by Doctor Ruth then it's good for a laugh. But like you, I have no clue where Brinker goes from here.
