There is way more than enough square mileage on the planet to provide for the worlds energy consumption, including for electricity production and transportation. I don't have the numbers right now , but I read where there is enough solar radiation falling on the Earth, about 3-4 kilowatt hours per day per square meter, in a few minutes to supply our energy needs for a year. There are a lot of square meters on Earth. The problem is collecting that energy in a usable form. Solar cells collect that energy with about 10% efficiency, and I believe plants do better than that. It has been calculated that 100 miles square (not 100 sq. miles) of solar cells is enough to provide for the U.S. electrical consumption. Transportation would need somewhat more.
