The problem with the play is that while for its day it was exceptionally gory, by today's standards of movies, it is rther tame -- look at the opening sequence of saving private ryan, for example. So it doesn't win on gore. Even on gratutious gore. But it's still Shakespeare, which turns people off, and it's Roman history without any gladiators, chariots, or battle scenes, and what is the point? It is far from his best writing -- in fact, having read it, I think the idea that Titus and Lear were written by the same person gets problematical, even given his development over the years.
