I don't know why whoever cooked this one up did it this way - I picked it up off the public charts a couple of months ago and KB has a long memory. It's one of a bunch of bookmarked charts I look at from time to time.

It's a good question though. I have another one to add and that is how is this significantly different or better than simply watching for vix ma crossovers.

My broad answer is simply that it works: the 21/200 ma crossover seem to mark intermediate tops and bottoms pretty well and could therefore be used within a swing trading strategy. And, as I've said before, I don't think individual data points have much if any significance.
