re"Can you tell us exactly how this new added chip technology will attempt to stop piracy? If it has Microsoft tentacles then I can see the origins..."

HW alone will not do it and SW alone will not do it. It is a combination of the two that could be used to offer better system security, better protection against virus, better protection against pirating of digital content. This is not all about stopping pirates of Music, Movies, or SW Apps. Is also about protecting online buying and selling, online communications (e-mail), and just plain surfing.

The problem is the privacy rights activists will complain even though is can offer better privacy, while at the same time the music thiefs will complain because they can't get their unlimited free music.

I'll leave the "exactly" part of the question to someone who can explain the various copy protections schemes much better than I.

Jim, <Can you tell us exactly how this new added chip technology will attempt to stop piracy?>

LaGrande is supposed to help security. I don't know exactly how, but I do know that security is something all of our systems lack these days. Security and privacy.

We sure could afford to spend some of our spare CPU performance on better security features. Of course, it's mainly a software and standards problem.

As for copy protection, it's not going to happen. There is no way on Earth that you can control bits of information once it gets to the client. If people want to copy 'em, they'll find a way.
