AMD is also working with Microsoft on Palladium, and implementing security features into their chips. Just what are people going to buy if they avoid Intel and AMD? VIA?

One of the keys to security is having the ability to uniquely identify one system versus another. The "fear" from privacy advocates is they become traceable. This was the CPU serial number flap a couple of years ago. The BS in this argument is most people who surf the web allow cookies, and therefore can be tracked.

What Intel, MS, and the application providers need to do with this new round of features and capabilities is allow the user of the system or the system administrator to easily manage the security features and keep control of what the outside world can see. I believe this was missing or at least incomplete with the CPU serial number alone a few years back.
