It is a matter of usage. Ordinarily, it is a term of approbation, or, at least, sympathy.....

martyr (mär´ter) 1. One who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles.

v. mur·dered, mur·der·ing, mur·ders
v. tr.
1. To kill (another human) unlawfully.
2. To kill brutally or inhumanly.
3. To put an end to; destroy: murdered their chances.

One of these terms is 3,000 times more accurate than the other.
