I'm afraid you have made a telling blow there Cobalt. As I lived in the USA for nearly a decade. I wrote a post here on SI somewhere about my experiences with USA cheques and banks.

In the UK you can go into any bank anywhere with any cheque or even any currency and get cash. This system has actually deteriorated a little over the years though.

I remember the first time I went into a bank in SF with UK stirling notes hoping to change them into dollars. I'm glad the security guard did not pull his gun.

Also I remember the first time I was accused of writing an "out of state cheque". "What do you mean an outta state cheque" I said. You do use frigging USA dollars in this state don't you? -g-

Reading the link (maybe one day I'll finally get one that isn't whacko based) I sense those were bad times.
