Dennis: It is my understanding that the Low Sulphur Diesel fuel has 5ppm at present and regular diesel has 20+ppm. I do not know the cost of the further refining of regular diesel to LSD. Yes, as you say mix a zero content fuel with a 5ppm and you would have a 2.5ppm fuel. The problems as I see them. The cost. To clean up the diesel engine requires an almost sulphur free fuel and i am not sure if this is emonomically possible.
As to Europe, the current diesel engines while much improved has lot of problems. There is a good comparison of diesel vs. gas engines in the current Truck Trends magazine at you local book store. The conclusion of the is that unless you need the torque, gas is better. Furthermore, diesel engines are, IMO closer to their optimum performance and are still dirty while gas engines have a long way to go.
I do not know if OE has any application that can be applied to diesel as the basic diesel engine is DI. The problem with diesel is that the sulphur content does not burn in the combustion process and comes out the tail pipe as sulphur dioxide, which mixed with moisture is sulphuric acid.
