9-11: We Shall Never Forget
A Proclamation for a Day of Infamy
September 10, 2002

“Have we now forgotten this Powerful Friend? The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth — that God governs in the affairs of men.”
— Benjamin Franklin

From the founding of our country, Americans — religious and nonreligious — have recognized that the United States of America is indeed one nation under God. It is a statement of historical fact and for most a declaration of faith as well.

Today we remember 9-11—a day that shall live in infamy—a day we shall never forget.

We remember and grieve for the lives that were taken by an unspeakable and unjustified act of hatred toward America. More than 2,800 innocent lives taken by fanatical cowards who were unfit to breathe the same air as their victims. We shall never forget.

We remember with grateful hearts the heroism, compassion, and self-sacrifice of firefighters, police officers and other rescue and recovery workers, who, knowing the imminent and immense danger to themselves, risked all to save others—hundreds of them gave the last full measure of devotion. They saved most, yet mourned because they could not save all. We shall never forget.

We remember with grateful hearts the heroes of Flight 93 who rolled against evil on a wing and a prayer. They died fighting to spare their fellow Americans further death and destruction. We shall never forget.

We remember with grateful hearts the sight of our U.S. military men and women, leaving home and family to board planes and ships to protect us and defeat the evildoers. Once again, the world saw that it is an enormous mistake to awaken the sleeping giant. They have picked a fight they cannot win. The sound of your engines far above us and the sight of your ships leaving our shores gave us comfort. We know that you will do your utmost to insure that no further harm will come to us—not on your watch. We pray for you. We shall never forget.

We remember with grateful hearts that this is one Nation under God. The God revealed in Holy Scripture, Who has sustained us and blessed us from our beginning as a Nation. It was He who was first on our lips that infamous day because there are no atheists in foxholes or falling buildings. It is through Him that we have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We have acknowledged Him in our founding documents, on our coin and currency, and have carved His sacred text on our public buildings and monuments. We appeal to Him in our oaths and affirmations to give credence to the truth of our proclamations. We have called on Him once again to save us, comfort and protect us during this time of infamy. We crowded our houses of worship in the days and weeks that followed 9-11. Because we thought then that we shall never forget. But in the ensuing year attendance has waned and we are in danger of becoming a people who honor Him with our lips but our hearts are far from Him.

We must pray and we must never forget that being a nation under God means living it out in our personal and public lives, shaping our values and priorities, and formulating our public policy and laws. For He has told us, “Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.”

Let us continue to remind one another so that—we shall never forget.
