Unlike Joseph McCarthy's Communists, who were of questionable threat value I don't really know what you mean by "Joseph McCarthy's Communists," but Communist spies were a real threat to the safety and integrity of this country. The worst examples were Klaus Fuchs and the Rosenbergs who stole plans for nuclear weapons and gave them to the Soviets, who were able to build their own atom bombs in 1949. But for that the history of Eastern Europe would have been very different. McCarthy is more famous for "witch-hunting" in Hollywood, so maybe that's what you mean.
