The big difference is that Stalin never attacked the US. If he had, Russia would have been obliterated. Has Hussein attacked the US? I say yes through his supported surrogate, Bin Laden. If Iraq gets nuclear weapons and passes some off to some other surrogates, if Bin laden is dead, and they are detonated in the US and/or UK, then Iraq would be obliterated with a much larger loss of life than an attack now to take out Sadam.

I don't know why Saddam moving into SA is called a "worst-case scenario". The House of ibn Saud would scurry like the chickens they are, and be disgraced, the Saudis would be so terrified they would forget to hate us for at least ten minutes, and we would have an unmistakable casus belli. We should send Saddam an invitation ;-) I mean, it's not like Saddam's army would have a serious chance of standing up against us if he moved into SA, nor is he likely to prevail against our troops in SA. Anybody know who this guy Viorst is?

Best Case Scenario After extensive bombing of military targets, Iraq's government crumbles. Saddam pulls a Hitler and dies in a bunker. Having seen two governments fall after 9/11 state sponsored terrorism is largely ended. US goes in and brokers an equitable peace among the Shiite Sunnies and Kurds. The US uses Iraq oil to pay for their good works and in the meantime open the spigots to break OPEC. The world goes on to enjoy 50 years of incredible growth due to market-priced energy. Muslim extremism is put beside Soviet communism in the ashcan of history. McDonalds opens up in Mecca.
