Hello Snowshoe, I am neither in favor of nor against hedging, just as I am not for and not against going long on bonds and short on stocks. Hedging is simply a way to make money in some environments and another way to lose bread in other circumstances.

Does hedging depress prices of goods hedged? Probably.
Does hedging matter in the long run to the goodies hedged? Perhaps not.

Am I in favor of ABX hedging gold if I can be sure that metal will tank to USD 10/oz? Absolutely, and I would do a piece "In Defense of Hedging" without compensation.

Chugs, Jay
