Another thought on max pain - If you look at an array of options expirations on a given day you will sometimes find that the difference in the amount of options blown out does not vary much within a range of two or three contiuous strikes. In such a case max pain is not going to be nearly so helpful. I use it in deciding what covered calls to write.
