Doren,

I agree that the best thing that Apple could do strategically right now is to introduce a machine that is incompatible with ALL existing Macintosh software just because it runs on an x86. That is, that's the best thing they could do if their primary goal is to lose all of their installed base and enter bankruptcy as quickly as possible.

Or they could buy Motorola's interest in the AIM consortium, with which Motorola would most likely be more than happy to part, and then partner with IBM to solidify the PPC's performance lead over x86. And they should migrate to the 64-bit POWER chips as soon as they have their vector extensions working.

The primary benefit of switching to x86 would be to have a faster clock frequency. So maybe what they should do is simply to quadruple the clock rate on the PPC, and use a simple counter to block 3 out of 4 clock pulses. Then they could immediately ship a 5 GHz PPC with exactly the same performance as their 1.25 GHz chip. Would that satisfy your fast-clockrate hunger?

Dave

However the Porshe vs McDonalds argument doesn't hold water, and is getting increasingly leaky.

you are mixing metaphors.... the Mcdonalds of the computer world are all losing money because of a gigantic price war, even dell is losing money, it just doesn't want to show you one of it's major expenses in its income statement, but cash flow is being wiped out by this expense.....

and porsche or BMW or Mercedes or apple do not need to engage in a price war, because they innovate new products....

and the pentiums/Athlons do not continue to gain speed against the PPC.....

this web site shows that the PPC gained 10% speed comparison, since the 2.8 Pentium came out.....

cpuscorecard.com

before the 2.8 pentium came out, and the 1.25 G4, the G4 was only showing 80% of the speed..... AND THAT'S BEFORE including Altivec, and Dual processors....

this site states that it is only interested in single processor speeds, and only shows a score for them......you can also see that the athlon multi processor chips are showing the same score as their single processor cousins..... this site is heavily biasing the results for single processor intel benchmarks, which favor intc over AMD or PPC's. this site also states that it does not take into account most of Altivecs performance gains...

yet the G4 with less than half the ghz rating, is about 90% the speed of a 2.8 ghz P4...... that is some mighty impressive results.....
