<< I worry about the effects of highly potent processed derivatives (like heroin and crack) >>

Meth is a bad one and the chemicals used to make it are so toxic that when they bust a lab the guys go in wearing HAS MAT suits. We have a lot of the labs in my area because it requires anhydrous ammonia and all it takes to get 2,000 gallons of it around here is a truck with a hitch.

Correct. I agree.

Re: "I worry about the effects of highly potent processed derivatives (like heroin and crack)..."

>>> Yes. Most of the commonly used 'natural' substances are made into a more serious problem by man's manipulation. (For example: why do tobacco companies add ammonia to their products? Answer - to increase the uptake of nicotine into the blood. Another question: when did heroin start to be a social problem? When western doctors began prescribing this new drug derivative to 'cure' morphine addiction !!! When did morphine become a social problem? When western doctors began prescribing this new drug - along with use of the newly invented syringe - to 'cure' opium habituation....)

Re: "in circumstances that are not guarded, as when people are on the job."

>>> Agreed. Businesses have an absolute right to mandate certain performance standards of their workers.

>>> Society also has a right to act against risks to the innocent - but I would argue, less right to restrict private behaviors.
