Petz,

There were some rumors that the late Q4 launch was postponed to early Q1 because of infrastructure. Now with this news, it is clear that it was obviously not the case. It is the processor that is the bottleneck, otherwise, AMD would have blamed somebody.

Here is my speculation (hope), which has maybe 1% probability of being correct:
The desktop Clawhammer was supposed to be single memory channel, 236K L2, 1 HT, Socked 7xx part. AMD realized that this part is not performing adequatly compared to competition, so this part was scrapped (or postpone indefinitely, possibly to be used in the future under Duron name, as a replacement for K7.

What will be sold as desktop chip will be what originally supposed to be an Opteron DP, 2 channel memory, 2 HT channel, 512k L2, Socket 9xx part. Its original schedule was H1 2002, and it will remain that.

Joe

<This is pathetic.>

Yep, especially I don't like the Barton delay part of the news. Because of the modular design, any L2 size in K7/K8 can be put together in 64KB increments and validated very quickly. Then the delay of a 512KB L2 part can indicate that they are still having a high defect density on their 130nm node. This would be the worst possible reason and would also affect the K8 schedule.

Just speculation.
