Al,
Suggest you and thread read Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis. Great insight into that period and very easy to read. Slavery was a great crime of its time and many in the south realized that as well. I like to examine history as a marxist occasionally and the economic causes of the institution jump out at you. The racism was often used to explain the economic system. Many southerners knew the racial arguments were false but allowed their use to perpetuate the institution that gave them and their economic benefits. And it was easier to get poor whites onboard by giving them someone lower on the totem pole. In the south an alliance between poor whites, indentured servants and slaves would have been a natural one if not for the myths and lies created about africans. Mike
