There seems to be this widespread fear of "conspiracy theories" as though they were mythical impossibilities. But conspiracies DO exist. Powerful ones. What was September 11, if not a singleminded conspiracy backed by years of meticulous planning? What were Enron's energy trading schemes if not conspiracies to milk billions of dollars from the people of California? How about the 2000 election (ever heard of ChoicePoint's role in supplying Florida with a completely bogus list of suspected felons, mostly Democratic-voting minorities, in exchange for $14 million and a major data-mining contract in the War against Civil Liberties? Microsoft's anticompetitive deals with computer makers?

I don't understand this at all. A much safer assumption is that whenever a conspiracy CAN be formed that will bring sufficient money and power to those in a position to form it, that conspiracy WILL be formed. Follow the money.

Chomsky has thrown off the shackles of prejudice against conspiracy theory, and this has opened his eyes to all kinds of shocking confluences of power.
