Mike, Unstable jupiter missiles in cuba that were going to be withdrawn but not announced yet, gave the russians the reason to bring the missiles to cuba. Missiles encircling US is a difference though because western hemisphere was always off limits while europe has been fighting these battles for centuries on the borders. Russians thought kennedy weak because of bay of pigs and krushchev-kennedy meeting earler that year. Both Krushchev and Kennedys thwarted the militarys desire for war and the threat of nuclear war which was like a sword of damocles over both the US and USSR for a decade was lifted. Not once until now was the world that dangerous again. Now it is that way again. Is there someone in Bagdad who can play the part of Krushchev--perhaps the photogenic Tarik Aziz--I doubt it but one can hope. Secret correspondences between Tarik and W's younger brother jeb?? Mike
