In the documentary "Manufacturing Consent", he claims that his detractors disallow his thesis by requiring a strict causal chain of events that the "five filters" operate in the manner he and Herman claim (as if logic is a burdensome "sixth filter"). He claims that the evidence to support his entire thesis is sufficient despite the fact that he has scant or inconclusive evidence at key points in his argument.

Agreeing with Chomsky is a matter of faith, not of pure reason (and this is OK).

My answer to Chomsky is, of course the mass media filter out important news and information. What do you expect? Why should this be earth-shattering news to anyone? Even Chomsky, if in control of the media, would intentionally or unwittingly edit out information that someone would consider important. Chomsky frames the entire issue as a subversion of democracy, which is a risible conceit on his part. Under true democracy, there would be far fewer alternative voices in the media, not more. The first people the mob would hang would be "public intellectuals" like Chomsky.

What we need instead is a rennaissance of liberty. I can't help thinking that Chomsky would oppose the sort of liberty I envisage, although it would give him all the freedom to do what he claims he can't today. Chomsky is interesting, and I have read several of his books, but he is more a left-wing version of Rush Limbaugh than anything, complete with his disavowal of "soundbites" and the posturing as a "public intellectual".

BTW, I have respect for everyone's opinion if it is meant as an honest search for what is right or best. Many times on SI, the discussions are made into personal attacks by people lacking in intellectual and emotional maturity.

JMHO.
