Will, I have used a GPS while boating on the Great Lakes and have nothing but praise for it in Fog or Stormy weather.

In the mountains its less useful. Most trails circle and wind and recross a dozen times in just a few miles. A good horse or mule has the best built in GPS. After six hours of trail riding just turn them around, take your hands off the reins and they will retrace their own steps exactly. (even in the dark).

A GPS with sending capabilities would be useful as an attachment to a favorite pet that like to wander.
