Test for gold is boil it in lye all night. If it does not dissolve it was gold. (diamonds do not dissolve either) Platinum metal pure is insoluble except in aqua regia as is gold, and if you do blowpipe analysis, it is infusible in the blowpipe flame.

A quick test for precious vs non-precious metals is actually your tastebuds. Put the object in your mouth, if it tastes like anything then it is probably non-precious. Silver, gold, platinum, palladium, etc have no taste. Even plated objects will have a taste.
