I went to a party the other night and an HP guy was there talking about cpq. He said the tandem acquisition was the best thing cpq ever did, it was the only truly profitable acquisition, and that the dec line was all but dead. fwiw, just one guy's opinion.

Charles - I spoke with a Tandem guy a while ago about that. He said that Tandem had originally planned to go with Itanium for their next generation, but after the DEC acquisition, they were told to port to Alpha instead. Out the window with all the Itanium work, start over... then, 2 years into that work, drop everything and back to Itanium. He said the only silver lining was that maybe Itanium would actually work this time, it probably would have been a sad story to have developed for any of the earlier versions.
